Title: Community Partnerships Fellow with the Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site  

Location:  Richmond, VA  

Position Dates: October 21st, 2024- September 19 th , 2025 (48-week term) 

Pay:  $900/week ($600/stipend + $300/additional member benefit) 

Status:   This is a full-time, temporary, AmeriCorps National Service position.

Appalachian Conservation Corps:   

Our Individual Placement program works to connect young people to conservation service work across Appalachia and neighboring communities in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, DC, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. ACC is a program of Conservation Legacy, a nationwide network of conservation organizations.  

 

Individual Placements gain hands-on experience at their placement site, and ACC supports them through their term, as well as provides a variety of benefits to help them succeed in achieving their career goals. ACC welcomes national applicants, but also emphasizes the engagement of local individuals who represent the communities in which they serve.  

 

Placement Site:  

Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site in Richmond, Virginia, commemorates the life of Maggie L. Walker, a progressive and talented African American Woman.  Maggie Lena Walker devoted her life to civil rights advancement, economic empowerment, and educational opportunities for Jim Crow-era African Americans and women. As a bank president, newspaper editor, and fraternal leader, Walker served as an inspiration of pride and progress. Today, Walker’s home is preserved as part of the site and as a tribute to her enduring legacy of vision, courage, and determination.  

 

Position Summary:  

This position would be geared toward outreach and partnerships in the Jackson Ward Community. Potential candidate would work directly with the Superintendent and park Leadership Team. This position's main goal would be to support community partnerships through planning, marketing, and collaboration with many stakeholders. While a good deal of guidance would be provided, candidate would have the opportunity to work independently on several substantive projects and duties including:  

  • Working with Superintendent to develop annual work plans and agreements with key partners.  
  • Work with community and park staff on development of Jackson Ward community plan.  
  • Development of partner and stakeholder list focusing on Jackson Ward and needs of Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site.  
  • Working with park staff to coordinate outreach activities.  
  • Attending meetings and special events with partners, stakeholders, and community members.  
  • Development of outreach plan for Maggie L. Walker to focus on preservation, interpretation and other issues related to the site.  

 

Key Skills to be achieved:  

  • Development of planning and management documents  
  • Public speaking and community engagement  
  • Business, interpretive, and creative writing  
  • Specialized skills related to preservation, interpretation, and management of a National Park Service site  

 

This position will be mostly in person with some remote work opportunities. Housing is NOT provided for this position. Applicants local to the Richmond area are preferred.

General Qualifications:   

To qualify for this AmeriCorps position, you must be between the ages of 21 and 30, and a US citizen that has received a high school diploma or GED. All offers of employment are conditional upon completion of an acceptable check of the National Sex Offender Public Registry and federal criminal background check. Must be eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award.  

  • Possess a valid driver’s license.  

 

Preferred Qualifications:  

Advanced/Graduate student with background or course work in applicable areas including Marketing, community relations, communications, public relations, etc.
