Health Promoter (4 Positions Available)

Erie Neighborhood House, a community-building agency empowering Chicago’s low-income and immigrant families and dedicated to promoting a just and inclusive society is seeking a Health Promoter / Promotor de Salud.

A health promoter at Erie Neighborhood House is a trusted community member dedicated to empowering peers through education and connections to social and health resources. Equipped with proper resources, training, and support, health promoters deliver numerous social and economic benefits while enhancing community health by connecting neighbors to healthcare and social services, educating peers about disease and injury prevention, making community resources more accessible and mobilizing communities for positive change via targeted outreach programs.

A Health Promoter / Promotor de Salud perspective allows us to customize activities to address specific community conditions, known as social determinants of health, which significantly impact individual health. These determinants include financial security, housing, transportation, food insecurity, education, and healthcare.

The Health Promoter / Promotor de Salud will demonstrate the character values of honesty, respect, responsibility and caring. The mission of the Community Wellness and Support Services program is to promote a culture of health and encourage Erie’s staff and participants to become leaders in the movement for community wellness and equity.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Health Promoters play a crucial role in enhancing the overall health and well-being of the community by making healthcare and social services more accessible, educating peers on disease prevention, and promoting positive lifestyle changes.

  • Provide health and low-income resources to community members.
  • Address the needs of ethnic and racial groups, vulnerable populations, and communities with major health concerns.
  • Advocate for communities often overlooked due to economic or cultural differences.
  • Teach individuals and families to adopt healthier eating habits and encourage active lifestyles.
  • Assist people in navigating and enrolling in public assistance programs and health insurance.
  • Identify and research new services and resources for community members.
  • Provide general information to community members on available community resources and basic health and nutrition.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Available to engage in blocks of a minimum 2 hours to complete 150 hours of service between July 1, 2024, thru June 30, 2025.
  • High School Diploma.
  • Experience working with an immigrant population.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
  • Ability to facilitate and lead community workshops, presentations, and community projects.
  • Desire and ability to work independently, but also to perform in a team environment.
  • Commitment to social justice and sensitivity to the assets and challenges of a diverse group of participants.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends.
  • Reliable transportation is required to travel between work sites, partner agencies, workshops, and outreach events.
