Job Description

Major, Lindsey & Africa’s Interim Legal Talent group has a need for an Interim Labor Attorney or Labor Relations Legal Professional for the next 6 months with possible extensions at additional locations.

Overview

We are seeking a seasoned labor attorney or labor relations legal professional to support a manufacturing organization undergoing a significant operational and cultural transformation. This role is critical to helping the company transition from a piece rate to a flat rate compensation system, improve performance management practices, and prepare for an upcoming union contract negotiation. The ideal candidate will be a strong, fair, and approachable leader who can work closely with plant supervisors and employees to drive change on the ground.

Experience (Required)

  • Proven experience interpreting and applying labor contract language
  • Background in labor relations, employment law, or HR with a focus on union environments
  • Experience working in or with manufacturing plants
  • Demonstrated ability to train supervisors on performance management processes
  • Comfortable working across multiple shifts (1st, 2nd, and 3rd)
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; able to deliver “tough love” with empathy

Additional “Nice to Have” Experience

  • Experience transitioning organizations from piece rate to flat rate compensation systems
  • Prior work in union contract negotiations or labor strategy
  • Experience developing performance management playbooks or training materials
  • Familiarity with cultural change initiatives in industrial settings
  • Ability to navigate resistance and build trust with frontline employees

Location

  • Remote role with requirement to travel twice over the first 6 weeks to the plant site in Missouri and periodic visits thereafter
  • On-site portion is in St. Joseph, Missouri
  • Potential for extension at additional locations after the initial 6 months.
  • Travel and hotel covered by company

Responsibilities

  • Serve as an on-site labor relations advisor during a critical transition period
  • Support the implementation of a flat rate pay system
  • Train supervisors on how to manage performance using contract provisions
  • Help identify and address underperformance using existing contract language
  • Collaborate with plant leadership to improve discipline and accountability
  • Engage with employees across all shifts to build understanding and buy-in
  • Assist in developing a performance management process or playbook
  • Provide ongoing support through a mix of on-site and remote work

Qualifications

  • Ability to work 40 hours/week initially, then scale to 20–30 hours/week
  • Flexibility to work across shifts (1st: mid-day, 2nd: early evening, 3rd: 11 PM–7 AM)
  • Willingness to wear safety equipment when on the plant floor
  • Comfortable with a dynamic, evolving work environment
  • Laptop provided

Pay Rate: $110-$140
